Epidemiology
Chikungunya Fever is an acute infectious disease caused by CHIKV (Chikungunya virus), transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and characterized by fever, rash and joint pain. Chikungunya Fever epidemic was confirmed in Tanzania in 1952, and the virus was isolated in 1956. The disease is mainly prevalent in Africa and Southeast Asia, and has caused a large-scale epidemic in the Indian Ocean in recent years. The clinical symptoms of the disease are similar to those of Dengue Fever and are easily isdiagnosed. Although the fatality rate is very low, large-scale outbreaks and epidemics are likely to occur in areas with high mosquito vector density.
