Epidemiology
Fecal occult blood refers to a small amount of bleeding in the digestive tract, where red blood cells are destroyed by digestion, there are no abnormal changes in the appearance of the stool, and bleeding cannot be confirmed with the naked eye or under a microscope. In cases of gastrointestinal bleeding, fecal occult blood tests in patients with digestive tract ulcers often show intermittent positive results; dysentery, rectal polyps, hemorrhoidal bleeding, etc. may also cause many red blood cells in the stool, resulting in a positive occult blood test[1]. Therefore, fecal occult blood test is an important and relatively effective method for testing gastrointestinal bleeding caused by various reasons.
