Epidemiology
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a gonadotropin secreted by basophils in the anterior pituitary and is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of about 30,000 daltons. Its molecule consists of two distinct peptide chains (α and β) that are non-covalently bound. The secretion of FSH is regulated by Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) produced by the hypothalamus, and regulated by sex hormones secreted by target glands through a negative feedback mechanism.
The level of FSH is elevated during menopause, after oophorectomy, and in precocious ovarian failure. Abnormal relationships between Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and FSH and between FSH and estrogen are associated with anorexia nervosa and polycystic ovary disease.
