Epidemiology
Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a special type of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). About 95% of APL patients are accompanied by a special cytogenetic change, namely t(15;17)(q22;q21), which makes the PML gene on chromosome 15 and the retinoic acid receptor α gene (RARA) on chromosome 17 fused to form the PML-RARA fusion gene. Due to different breakpoints of the PML gene, the PML-RARA fusion gene can be divided into long type (L type), short type (S type) and variant type (V type), accounting for approximately 55%, 40% and 5% respectively.
